About Digital Tools for Social Impact
We write for the people running food banks, clinics, shelters, and community organizations — the ones doing the actual work of showing up for their neighbors, often with a small team, a tighter budget, and zero patience for marketing jargon.
Here’s the thing we kept running into: these organizations are good at the work. What they’re not always set up for is being found while doing it. A parent looking for an after-school program, a family searching for a food pantry that’s open tonight, someone who wants to volunteer this weekend — they’re all searching. And too often, the organization that could actually help them just isn’t showing up.
That’s the gap Digital Tools for Social Impact is about.
What we cover
Mostly, we talk about local visibility — the unglamorous, practical side of getting found by the people already looking for you. That means:
How maps and local search actually work, and why they matter more for a five-mile mission than almost any other channel
What makes people trust one organization over another when they’re comparing options in a hurry
Real examples of nonprofits that fixed their visibility, and what specifically changed
The difference between traffic and action — because a page view doesn’t feed anyone, but a donation or a signup does
We’re not going to tell you to “leverage synergies” or chase follower counts. Most of what we write about is small, specific, and something you could act on the same week you read it.
Who’s behind this
Understanding eCommerce began when we kept seeing the same pattern: mission-driven organizations doing real, meaningful work, yet invisible to the very people searching for them. We work in local search and digital strategy, and at some point it stopped making sense to apply it only to brands trying to sell more stuff. Nonprofits needed it more.
So that’s what we do now — help food banks, clinics, shelters, and local nonprofits become the thing people find first, not the thing they wish they’d found sooner.
A quick note on AI
Yes, we use AI. And I know there will be people who clutch their pearls about that — then we aren’t for you. In today’s world, we use every tool available to do the work well, and AI is one of them. What doesn’t change is the thinking, the strategy, and the judgment behind it. That part’s still ours.
